$55,000 in youth-led grants made to support mental health and anti-violence efforts
Every student deserves a quality education and to feel safe within school.
But — following the recent mass shooting at Michigan State University and more than a year after the Oxford High School shooting — students continue to endure violence, threats of violence and stressors from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The $55,000 in grants comes from a $100,000 pool of money initiated and overseen by the Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee after the Oxford shooting in November 2021.
The purpose of this Youth-to-Youth Community Solutions Fund is to help southeast Michigan schools tackle mental health, gun violence and school safety.
Michigan Science Center’s ‘STEM in a Box’ program meets students where they are
Hundreds of students throughout southeast Michigan became rocket scientists, sports managers and environmentalists with the new “STEM in a Box” program from the Michigan Science Center.
Supported by a grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the program distributed 450 kits containing all the necessary materials to perform safe, virtually guided science experiments from home to students throughout the foundation’s seven-county service area.
The grant exemplifies the Community Foundation’s commitment to STEM education, access for under-resourced students, and not letting advancements in either area recede because of the isolation COVID-19 imposed.

Support Women and Women-led Nonprofits during Women’s History Month and all year
Did you know that less than 2% of philanthropic giving goes to women’s and girls' organizations?
At the same time, the research shows women’s wealth is growing and women — whose charitable giving is more likely to be motivated by empathy — also more frequently donate to women’s and children’s causes.
Why is this important to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan? Well, we’re committed to developing the next generation of philanthropists who, in collaboration with our staff and community partners, can lead us into a brighter future for all residents in our region, including women and children.
We are proud to partner with women-led nonprofits and programs that support women throughout southeastern Michigan and invite you to join us in this effort. A gift to the endowed Fund for Women provides support to programs and organizations that directly impact women and women-led nonprofits in our region today, tomorrow and forever.
